Now Trending: Tortoise Shell

Hello, all!  I am back from my month-long blogging hiatus and feeling more organized and refreshed than I was before.  (Sometimes it helps to take a step back after finishing the semester and just take some lazy time off for yourself.)  But now I’m ready to continue sharing my writing with the world, and I hope you’re as excited as I am to be back 🙂  Today I’m exploring my latest go-to pattern: tortoise shell!

From zebra to snakeskin to cheetah to leopard, animal-inspired prints have become a popular way to punch up neutral basics and punchy neons alike.  Mother Nature’s finest prints have been spotted (pun intended) on fashion-forward celebs including Beyonce, Rihanna, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Vanessa Hudgens, Khloe Kardashian, and Heidi Klum, just to name a few.

While the super hot cheetah print hardly shows any signs of cooling down, I’d recommend taking a sidestep from your fashion comfort zone by visiting another important member of the animal kingdom: the tortoise!

Animal prints– especially cheetah, leopard, and snakeskin– are particularly easy to find on both clothing and handbags, but the tortoise shell pattern is a bit trickier to get your hands on.  Most tortoise shell apparel comes in the form of accessories.  Thus, the four picks showcased above are my go-to choices because they are both easy to find and easy to wear.  These pieces can be worn as neutral additions to an easy daytime look or as bold statement pieces when paired with a simple, streamlined outfit.

For a more intense version of the trend, try wearing all of your tortoise shell accessories at once.  Be careful to keep the rest of your look fairly neutral and simple– perhaps even monochromatic– and let the tortoise do the talking.

How are you rocking the tortoise shell trend this summer?  Comment with ideas or post a link to an Instagram of your latest outfit!  I love to see what other people are trying trend-wise : )
